BUMBLE AT THE TEST: Lehmann's Aussies fight to the end, but can he make them win?

LEHMANN'S TERMS

Australia just wouldn’t lie down and that performance had Darren Lehmann stamped all over it. They had only four wickets left, and the pitch wasn’t conducive to strokeplay.

They could just have eked it out. But they were belligerent and played proper cricket shots. off to coach Lehmann.

Whether he can turn them into a winning team, only time will tell.

YOUR NUMBER'S UP!

Having said all that, what is it with the Australians? Why can’t they pick a proper No 11? First Ashton Agar, then James Pattinson!

England have played it by the book over the years, with the likes of Phil Tufnell, Peter Such and Alan Mullally. But the Aussies turn up with blokes who should be batting at No 5. It’s not good enough, and it should be investigated by the ICC!

IT'S JIMINY CRICKET

Jimmy Anderson was just irresistible. To bowl 13 overs off the reel in that heat was a wonderful performance. At one point, it felt like Anderson v Australia, but I liked what Alastair Cook said at the presentation. He backed Stuart Broad and Steven Finn, and just said Anderson had had a good day. That was clever man-management.

IF IT AIN'T BROKE...

I wouldn’t change a thing for Lord’s, but I understand what people are saying about the way that Finn struggled.

Michael Holding will tell you that bowlers can lose form too — and it happens when they lose their rhythm. However, do you change this winning team? I wouldn’t.

THE GAME AT IT'S BEST

I loved the way that both sides embraced the concept of the Ashes. Knock hammer and tongs out of each other for five days — and trust me, I could hear the stump mic — then go and shake hands at the end of it all, and say: ‘See you in a few days at Lord’s.’ It’s just how the game should be played.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Our hotel restaurant didn’t seem too keen to serve us on Saturday night, so we nipped across the road to a great curry house called 4,550 Miles From Delhi. The highlight came when a young lad popped over for an autograph. He was about to head to Afghanistan for his second tour of duty, and we all wished him the very best. It was a nice moment.

BRAD'S A COOL CUSTOMER

Brad Haddin showed what a good selection he was: tried and trusted, experienced, tough. He knows all about those hard Ashes situations. As for young Pattinson, I said on commentary when he walked out that this bloke was no rabbit. He’s made runs in India in similar conditions, so it was no surprise to see him get stuck in here.

Real Salt Lake prevails

Alvaro Saborio scored in each half to help Real Salt Lake beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1 Friday night in a Major League Soccer match.

Real Salt Lake (13-7-3) has won three home matches in a row and is a point behind league-leading San Jose.

Darren Mattocks scored for Vancouver (9-7-7),which is third in the Western Conference. The Whitecaps have three points more than Sounders FC (8-5-7), but Vancouver has played three more matches.

Whitecaps goalkeeper Joe Cannon got a red card when he committed a hand-ball infraction outside the penalty area in the 76th minute and will miss the team's next match as a result.

FA charges Chelsea's Terry

Chelsea captain John Terry was charged by the English Football Association with racially abusing an opponent, two weeks after he was cleared by a court of the same offense.

The FA said it considered the evidence from the trial before charging Terry, 31, with directing abuse at Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match in October.

"I deny the charge and I will be requesting the opportunity to attend the commission for a personal hearing," Terry said.

Glasgow Rangers demoted

Glasgow Rangers will begin next season in the fourth tier, Scotland's lowest professional league, after the move was approved by the country's soccer authorities.

The Scottish Football League said agreement had been reached after weeks of discussions to allow the team conditional membership in the Scottish Football Association.

Rangers, Scottish champion a record 54 times, were put in bankruptcy protection because of tax debts exceeding $30 million.

Harris criticizes Freeh report

Hall of Famer Franco Harris and two other former Penn State players say the report about the school's handling of the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal "is highly flawed, and factually insufficient."

Harris, Rudy Glocker and Christian Marrone sent to other Penn State alumni an email and letter criticizing the Freeh report they plan to publish in The Wall Street Journal and other publications.

The players contend there was a rush to judgment by media, the board of trustees, university officials and the NCAA after the blistering report was released July 12.

The report, compiled by a team led by former FBI director Louis Freeh, accuses school officials, including late coach Joe Paterno, of covering up the abuse to avoid bad publicity.

"A grave injustice has occurred over these past two weeks that began with the issuance of the Freeh report," the email states. "After much review, it's clear the report is highly flawed, and factually insufficient. Yet, the media, the Board of Trustees, University officials and the NCAA, seem to have read only the conclusions and not the content of the report and have failed to question the report's evidentiary basis or lack thereof — they have rushed to judgment. As a result, OUR program has been brutally harmed and our Coach has been completely tarnished."

The 62-year-old Harris, who had his best NFL years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, played for the Seahawks in the 1984 season.

O'Brien says he has a plan

Penn State coach Bill O'Brien has a plan for dealing with the limitations of sanctions imposed on the Nittany Lions by the NCAA because of the Sandusky scandal.

With no bowl appearances for four years, combined with scholarship reductions, Penn State must find a way to recruit or the program could be in trouble for a decade.

"I don't understand how people think you just say, 'Well I quit, see you later.' That's a bunch of bull," O'Brien said at a Big Ten media day. "You look at the sanctions, and you figure out how to deal with them."

Brett Favre will be assistant high school coach

BILOXI, Miss. — Brett Favre is returning to football - as an assistant high school coach in Mississippi.

His agent, Bus Cook, told The Associated Press that Favre will work at Oak Grove High School this fall "to help out in some capacity, but I'm not sure exactly what his role will be."

The school is near the former NFL quarterback's home in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The Biloxi (Miss.) Sun-Herald reported that Favre, 42, is expected to be the offensive coordinator. Oak Grove head coach Nevil Barr told the AP he has talked about a possible role for Favre on the coaching staff, though a job title hasn't been defined. Favre has helped at Oak Grove in an unofficial capacity in previous years.

The three-time league MVP retired from the NFL in 2010.

Favre, who grew up in nearby Kiln, Miss., has kept a low profile in Hattiesburg since he retired. He rarely does interviews, though he is occasionally seen at Southern Mississippi's football or baseball games. Favre played in college at Southern Miss, where he also made his debut as a television analyst.

He's remained coy about future plans, but has often said how much he enjoys working with kids.

Oak Grove is a perennial power at the 6A level in Mississippi, which is the state's largest high school classification.

Favre played for 20 years in the NFL - mostly for the Green Bay Packers. He also played for the Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings. He is the league's all-time leader with 71,838 passing yards and 508 touchdowns and won a Super Bowl in 1996 with the Packers.

2 Gamecocks selected in 2011 NFL Draft

COLUMBIA (WACH) – Gamecock Defensive End Cliff Matthews was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the 7th round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Matthews was one of two Gamecocks selected in the draft.

Chris Culliver was the other South Carolina player taken. The safety was selected in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers.

Matthews had 38 tackles and 4.5 sacks in the 2010 season. He’ll join former Gamecocks John Abraham and Dunta Robinson on the Falcons.

Garrett Chisholm, Tori Gurley and Weslye Saunders were other high profile Gamecocks in the draft, but were not picked.

They will have the chance to be picked up as free-agents, when the NFL lockout ends.

No long-term contract for Fred Davis

Update: The 4 p.m. deadline has passed and NFL[

The Washington Redskins and tight end Fred Davis are not expected to reach an agreement on a long-term deal by Monday’s NFL franchise player deadline, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Davis was set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but the team used its franchise tag to retain his services. He signed that one-year tender — worth roughly $5.5 million — in March. The team and Davis’s agent have until 4 p.m. Monday to come to terms on a longer-term deal, but it appears that the deadline will pass without that happening, and Davis could again become a free agent next offseason.

Davis posted career-best numbers last season, with 59 catches for 796 yards in his fourth year out of USC. He also had three touchdown catches. But he missed the final four games of the season after failing multiple drug tests. Davis said he has learned from his mistakes and that he is eager to prove to team officials that his problems are a thing of the past. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said that they see a change in Davis, who they say is a big part of their plans for the 2012 season.

It doesn’t come as a surprise, however, that the team would want to wait before signing Davis to a long-term deal. With one more failed drug test, he would have to serve a one-year suspension.

City could cash in on Chicago link

We know about Bourbon Street, the Bears and the Chicago Way, but what do they know about us?

In the lead-up to the start of next spring’s direct flights between Thunder Bay and Chicago on United Airlines, some think the City of Thunder Bay would do well to promote itself to Chicagoans well before the jets take flight.

“I don’t think that’s a bad idea and we’ll be talking about that to (Thunder Bay Tourism manager) Paul Pepe,” Thunder Bay Mayor Keith Hobbs said Thursday.

United announced Tuesday its plans to increase the number of its North American routes that connect to “hub” cities like Chicago. A daily return flight from Thunder Bay, to start Feb. 14, was on the list.

Hobbs said he is aware of some Thunder Bay business people who have a reason to go to Chicago from time to time.

He said putting ads about Thunder Bay in major Chicago newspapers to attract potential Chicago-based tourists “wouldn’t be a waste of money.”

(Lakehead University had some success a few years ago by advertising its programs on the Toronto Transit Commission.)

A City of Chicago spokesman who works in Mayor Ralm Emanuel’s office said he can see a lot of travel between the two lakefront cities.

“I think Chicagoans like to show off their city and they also like to see the world,” said Tom Alexander.

“Personally, I also think United wouldn’t have put these flights out there if they didn’t see an opportunity.”

Alexander, who has been to Toronto, said he didn’t know if Emanuel gets many opportunities to travel to Canada.

Though Chicago isn’t known as a mining centre, the fact that it is a major hub could make it easier for mining industry representatives in other parts of the U.S. to get to Thunder Bay, bypassing Toronto.

“The last time I went to Reno, I had to go through Chicago,” said Garry Clark, the Thunder Bay-based executive director of the Ontario Prospectors Association.

Thunder Bay Coun. Iain Angus, a past-president of the North of Superior Tourism Association, said the opportunity for U.S. outdoorsy types to fly to the Lakehead “will divert some travellers from the road.”

“I don’t think United would be coming into our market if they didn’t see a big opportunity,” Angus added.

NOSTA has in the past attended hunting and fishing trade shows in Chicago; being able to tout direct flights will make Thunder Bay even more attractive as a destination, said Angus.

United said it wants to entice travellers to fly to U.S. hubs like Chicago, then continue to other destinations where the airline flies, like Orlando and Hawaii.

Thunder Bay-based Bearskin Airlines marketing director Ron Hell said the strategy makes a lot of sense.

“Clearly, the market they’re looking at is travel that goes beyond Chicago,” said Hell. “There’s a huge opportunity for them to be successful.”

United’s plan to offer flights from Thunder Bay to Chicago appears to have put the kibosh, for now, on Bearskin’s idea to offer direct flights from Thunder Bay to Minneapolis.

“It’s been on our radar for a while, but we haven’t made any decisions yet,” said Hell.
