オンライン英会話、長く続けてるとダレてきたりしませんか？講師のメンツもだいたい決まってきて驚きもなく、緊張感のない会話をダラダラとしてしまったりだとか。

お悩み相談されてしまったりだとか…。

しない人はいいんです。自分はだんだんダレてしまっていました。
会社での打ち合わせなどと違ってプレッシャーもない分、リラックス状態でした。

なんとかせねば！ということで始めたのがアーティクルリーディングです。（これ正しい言葉なのかな？）

しばらく続けてみて、さらにひと工夫することで4技能をバランスよく学べることに気がついたので、実践方法を共有します。

アーティクルリーディングで4技能をバランスよく学ぶ

アーティクルリーディング？何それ

読んで字のごとく！英語のアーティクル = 記事を読みます。ただし黙って読むのではなくて声に出して読みます。音読です。自分の場合はオンライン英会話で「フリーカンバセーション」的なものを選んでおき、レッスンが始まってからその場でアーティクルのリンクを送ります。カンタンです。

みたいな感じです。

これの良いところは、英会話レッスンを受けつつもリーディングを兼ねることができる点です。毎回新しい記事を読むので、新しい単語や表現にも出会いやすいです。

自分の興味があるアーティクルを選べば、その後のディスカッションもしやすくなり、結果としてたくさん話せたり、レッスン自体も充実したものになります。

アーティクルの『感想を英語で書く』&『添削してもらう』

しばらくは、単純にアーティクルを読んで内容についてディスカッションする、というのを続けていたのですが…

ある日、ほんのちょっとした工夫をすることで4技能全部カバーできるのでは🤔とふと思ったのです。

まさにこのツイートの通りなんですが、つまりこういうことです。

  1. オンライン英会話 で英語記事を読んで ⇒ Reading
  2. 話し = 記事内容についてディスカッションし ⇒ Speaking & Listening
  3. 感想を英語で書いて次回添削してもらえば ⇒ Writing
  4. SWLRの4技能全部カバーできる🎉

ポイントは上で挙げたように『感想を英語で書く』&『次回添削してもらう』というところです。読む ⇒ 話す ⇒ 書く のサイクルを作ることで4技能をバランスよく使うことができます。

「感想を書く」タイミングでアーティクルやレッスンを振り返ることになるため、自然と復習にもなります。

実践方法

具体的にはこんな感じで実践しています。レッスンを2回分使います。

  1. レッスン1回目：アーティクルを読む ⇒ 話す（ディスカッション）
  2. 復習：感想を書く
  3. レッスン2回目：感想を読む ⇒ 話す（添削してもらう・ディスカッション）

自分の場合、感想のパートはレッスン後忘れないうちにささっとやっちゃいます。時間があるときはブログに書いてさっとアップしていますが、メモ帳でもGoogleドキュメントでもなんでもよいと思います。

ポイントいくつか

読みたいアーティクルを準備しておく

オンライン英会話は1レッスン25分程度が多いと思います。時間を無駄にしないためにも、あらかじめ読みたいアーティクルを選んでおくと良いです。オンライン英会話のサービスによっては日本語訳付きのアーティクルが教材として提供されている事もありますし、もし思いつかなければ下記のサイトがおススメです。

オススメのサイトがあればぜひ教えてください！（なかなかちょうど良いレベル感を探すのが難しい）

さらに事前に時間を確保できる場合は、あらかじめ一読して知らない単語を調べておくとベターです。

時間がとれないときはその場でVOAやKyodo Newsのヘッドラインから選んじゃうこともありますが、やはり予習しておくと幾分か違います。予習大事。

少しだけ難しめのアーティクルを選ぶ

少しだけというのがポイントです。簡単すぎると新たに得るもの（知らない単語や表現など）が少ないというのが理由です。 逆に難しすぎると心が折れる⚠️ダメゼッタイなおそれがあるのでほどほどにしましょう。

ディスカッションの時間を考えると、だいたい10から15分くらいで読めるレベルが良いと思います。

内容・感想についてディスカッションする

やはり英会話レッスンなのでディスカッションは大事です。アーティクルという土台があるので話しやすいと思います。

英語で感想を書いていると、いろいろと質問したいことが出てくると思います。添削してもらいながらどんどん質問し、ディスカッションをすると良いです。例えば別の表現はないかなど。

そうすると単なる座学ではなくなるので記憶の定着がよい（※当社比）ですし、細かいニュアンスの違いもわかってくるのでおススメです✨

感想の添削は別の講師でもよし

添削は、リーディング時とおなじ講師の人だとスムーズですが、そうでなくても問題ないです。

予約が取れないなどの理由で別の講師の人に添削してもらう場合、感想の前に記事のバックグラウンド（要約など）からの説明が必要なので、むしろ勉強になります。

この方式でしばらく続けてみようと思っています。

"the year of issue" で "発行年" ですね。

"denomination" で　"(貨幣の)単位" なんですね。通常、その他のものの単位は "unit" を使ったりしますね。 また、カタカナ英語のいわゆる "デノミ" は "currency devaluation" とのこと。

Reiwa is comprised of the Chinese characters “rei,” meaning order, command and auspicious, and “wa” representing harmony, peace or Japan. The government translates the era name as “beautiful harmony.”

"構成する" の類語は色々ありますね。

感想

そういえば、今年って令和元年だった！というくらい個人的にはまだあまり実感がないので、硬貨が手元に来るのが楽しみです。 近頃猫も杓子もキャッシュレスですが、「モノ」にはやっぱり何かしらのマジックがあるなーと思ってしまいます。

Impression

Yeah I totally forgot about it, but this is the first year of Raiwa era! I'm very looking forward to actually seeing these reiwa inscribed coins, since personally it doesn't feel real yet. Nowadays everyone is talking about cashless, but I feel like "substances" seems to have some superpower in it, somehow.

NBAのドラフト制度に詳しくないとピンとこないところなのですが（ググりました）、NBAでは

  • 30チームがそれぞれ2回指名する (2巡 = トータル60名)
  • 各チームが同時に指名することはない (プロ野球と違うところ)
  • 1巡目の1位〜14位指名は抽選 = lottery で決まる

基本的にシーズンでの勝率が低い方から順に指名していけるのですが、そうなったときにドラフト全体1位指名を取るためにわざと負けたりすることがあったようで、それを防ぐため一巡目の1位〜14位に関しては「抽選で指名順を決める」ということになったそうです。

つまりここでは、八村選手が単に一巡目に指名されそう、というだけでなく "lottery pick" つまり上位14位までに指名されるだろう、ということを言っているわけですね。ふう。

最初の一文が言わんとしているのは "八村選手にはロールモデルがいなかった" ということですね。しかし "he could be that for somebody younger" "彼自身が若手にとってのロールモデルになることができる" と言っています。

さらに最後の文はちょっと意味が取りにくいですが、 "八村のような人物を成長に使う = 参考にすることができた(けどできなかった)" という意味かなと思います。

？となってしまう文ですが、"have back home" は "持ち帰る" よって "八村は、彼の成功がホームに持ち帰ることができる全国的なインパクトを認識している" ですね。

感想

八村選手が次世代のロールモデルになろうとしている、というお話。近ごろ、彼の言うところの "blackanese" の活躍がすごいですね〜。

バスケットボールは詳しくないのですが、スラムダンクはリアルタイムでアニメを見ていた世代です。マンガも全部読んだ気がする。八村選手は世代が違うと思うのですが、それでもスラムダンクに影響されていたというのは驚きです。

オンライン英会話の講師が言うところではフィリピンではバスケットボールが一番人気だそうで、スラムダンクもまだ放送されてる！って言ってました。再放送枠的なやつかな？おそるべし。

確かに、近ごろの目覚ましい活躍のわりに "blackanese" はまだ一般的ではないかもしれません。八村選手はきっと "blackanese" だけでなくNBAを目指す日本人の新たなロールモデルにもなる（既になってる）でしょうし、それよりなにより思いっきりやってほしいですね！

Impression

This is a topic about a basketball player Rui Hashimura, he became the first-Japanese first-round pick (!) in NBA draft. Recently, outstanding performances and various achievements by "blackanese" - in his word - in sports are far remarkable.

I'm not so familiar with basketball, but "Slam dunk" is definitely one of the masterpieces of sports themed manga in our generation. I was surprised that he also knows about that "legendary" manga, even he is not a generation of that.

I heard from a tutor of online English class that the most popular sports in the Philippines is basketball. As proof of it, "Slum dank" has been broadcasting in the country, even nowadays!

I reckon it might be true that "blackanese" hasn't yet been common in Japan even though their achievements are excellent. I'm pretty sure he's gonna be a roll model not only for "blackanese" but also for Japanese especially who aims to play basketball 🏀 in the NBA. Or, he's already a roll model probably?

Anyway, I wish he use his talents and abilities in the NBA to the fullest!

感想

個人的にはキャッシュレス大賛成なので、どんどん普及していけば良いなーと思います。

消費とキャッシュレスの関係でちょっと面白いなと思ったのが、キャッシュレスになることで消費者が「消費の喜びにフォーカスできる」と言うところ。つづく「故に、より消費しがちになる」と言う点は賛否両論あるんじゃないかなとは思いますが、「喜びにフォーカス」できるという点は心理学的側面から見たキャッシュレスペイメントの良いところという感じがしてすごく良いです。

「消費しがちになる」という点についても、単に気をつければ良いというだけなので、うまくやると社会全体の幸せの総量が増えるんじゃないかな〜。喜びをより喜びとしてより味わう、なんとなく人生哲学のようにも聞こえてきます。そこにポイント付与も加わるとゲーミフィケーションの要素も出てきますね。 実際ポイント付与なんて言ってもほんの数%バックにすぎないと思うのですが、ポイントの体にするだけで集める楽しみが加わったり、嬉しさが倍増するという。うまく考えたよなーと思います。

あとは本当に消費が増える＝売り上げが上がるのであれば、消費者・小売店・ペイメント事業者のWin-Win-Winなので、どんどん普及して消費が活性化してほしいものです。

In my opinion I'm all for cashless payment system, so I think it would be great if cashless would widely spread and became common and popular in Japan.

It's intriguing that consumers will become able to "focus more on satisfaction of the consumption" by paying money without cash. It might be a bit controversial the part "so consumers tend to spend more", but the part of "satisfaction" is so interesting d d because it's an advantage of cashless payment from the view point of psychology. I like this way of thinking so much, to be honest.

Even about the latter half, the part of "tend to spend more money", every consumer just needs to be careful. Yeah, problem solved! "Focus on the satisfaction, feel happiness as much as possible"... it sounds like one of the well-made philosophies of human life, isn't it?

Also, a new factor "gamification" will be added into it, because consumers will be granted point incentives. Actually, gamification by point incentive is a very good idea... technically speaking it's just a few percents cash back, but there is a pleasure of collection and satisfaction, just by using the form of point.

Lastly we need to think about is... probably about smaller retailers and merchants. If the total consumption raises and the sales will also raise eventually, that's a real Win-Win-Win situation for all stakeholders including consumers, retailers, and operators of cashless payment system.

感想

紙袋、意外とおしゃれな感じに仕上がってますね。自分はかなりUniqloを愛用しているので、まあまあ気になる話題です。 紙袋は重さや湿気に弱いので、スーパーとかの場合若干不便ですが（たぶんエコバックの方が吉）、衣類はそんなに重くないし水分もないのでどんどん紙袋に置き換えていけばいいんじゃないかなーと思いました。

包装のバイオマスプラスチックへの変更はもうどんどん進めて！という感じですが、それよりも年間22億個！もおにぎりが販売されている、というのは驚きです。いや、年間ひとり20個の月2個弱とすると少ないのかな？

Yeah I'm all for their plan... replacement of the material for rice-ball wrap to biomass plastics. That part is quite OK, but more importantly, I have to mention its quantity! 2.2 billion rice-balls are sold annually, it's just amazing. But wait, 2 onigiris per person per month? It sounds not so many to be honest.

Anyway, that replacement must have huge effect.

I'm just wondering... in order to cook such amount of rice-balls, where can they procure rice from? and how? Where is the factory for it? It'll probably smell very good around there. OK, I just noticed that for me the world is still full of unknown wonder! :)

感想

スムージー、とっても美味しそうなので単純にすごく楽しみです。「やんごとなきマンゴー」とかネーミングも面白い。なんとなく価格設定が中途半端（コンビニにしては高い・高級路線にしては安い、フレッシュには勝てない、みたいな）な気がしなくもないですが、見かけたら飲んでみようと思います。

I'm very looking forward to drink the smoothies because simply it looks very beautiful! I love their sense of naming such as "Yangotonaki Mango".

I'm wondering that the price settings are a little bit indecisive between 'reasonable' and 'fancy', because it's a bit expensive at convenience stores but a bit cheap at hotels, and importantly they'll never win against any fresh-made smoothies.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I'll get and drink it once it's released! :)

政府発表のリポートからの記事です。いわゆる三大都市圏以外を訪問する外国人観光客が増えているとのこと。個人的に地方(特に福岡や長野)によく行く機会があり、そのエリアでも外国人観光客の増加はうっすらと感じてはいたのですが、地方を選択する人がこれほど多いとは驚きです。いったいどこから見つけてくるんだろう？

This is an article based on a report from the government. More tourists from foreign countries visit nonmetropolitan areas nowadays, according to the article. I felt something like that since personally I have many oppotunities to visit some local areas in Japan such as Fukuoka and Nagano prefecture, but it's super surprising because the actual number (40% more) was way exceeded my expectation. But how could they find the sights? I'm just so curious about it.

感想

ドローン配達、いろんなところで実証実験やってて盛り上がってきてますね。

Uber eatsの場合はさらに自動車をドローンの着陸基地として検討中ということで、ドローンと車が連携している様を想像するとワクワクしますね！ 将来的にはどちらも自動運転になるとすると、空中でのルート探索に衛星が使えるかもしれないし、連携や高速通信のためには5Gネットワークが必要だし、これぞテクノロジー全部盛り！な感じで胸熱ですね。未来が楽しみです！

Impression

Many tech companies and organizations started conducting PoC for "delivery by drone", so there's no day that I don't hear about that nowadays. It's been one of the "hottest topic".

Notably in case of Uber eats, they're planning to use vehicles as a basement for drones. Thinking of a situation which... drones and cars connect each other and work together neat and orderly... it's super cool 😎, isn't it?

I assume (but pretty sure) that vehicles and drones will become autonomous ones, and they're gonna use satellites and 5G network to connect each other and search for the best route in the air, maybe right? It's literally cutting-edge technologies all stars ✨ I'm very looking forward to seeing such a future! :)

$250M -> $500M -> $1Bということでまさに倍々ゲーム！という感じです。 記事でも触れられていますが、確かに今ベトナム製と言われてぱっと浮かぶのは衣類ですが、食品類の輸入、とくに生鮮食材を増やすというのは面白いですね。AEONにいけばベトナムの食材がたくさん買えるようになるのかな？楽しみですね。

The total will be from $250M to $500M then $1B, it's an amazing growth! When it comes to Vietnam based products, the first thing which pops into my mind is clothing. It's a fresh idea for me that they're planning to import more foods from Vietnam, especially fresh food and vegetables. Will it be possible to get various fresh foods from Vietnam at Aeon in the future? That's intriguing!

モスバーガーは子供の頃大好きだったんですが、近頃どうもパッとしないのでぜひ頑張ってほしいです。ちょっと調べてみたところ、別のニュースソースだと 'Hubert Young' 氏は UCC上島珈琲フィリピンのCEOとのこと。

Impression

Mos burger is definitely one of my favorite burger chain restaurants in Japan, I like their burgers especially when I was a child. I'd like them to be back in business since their business looks slack nowadays.

Speaking of burger chain in the Philippines, we shouldn't miss Jollibee! I've been looking forward to their foray into Japan for a long time, how long does it take? Come on please!
