英語が上達しない人の特徴3つ
英語が上達しない人には3つのタイプがあると思う。
1、英語の習得をあきらめてしまった人
2、プライドの高い人
3、記憶のストックにこだわる人
好きな小説でvocabularyを増やす
以下に48個の英単語とその説明がある。実はこの単語は、村上春樹さんの「ノルウェイの森」のChapter 1で出て来た単語。
自分が好きな小説の英語版から、効果的にvocabularyを増やすことができる。その理由と自分なりのやり方を書く。

効果的に学習できる理由
英単語の学習では、その言葉がどういう場面・意図で使われるかを理解することが重要。つまり文脈(context)と一緒に学ぶ必要がある。文脈と一緒に学ぶことで、その言葉の本質を理解する、記憶に定着させる、自分で使えるようになる、ことが可能になる。(これは、単なる日本語訳の暗記では絶対にできない。)
一度読んだ事がある小説は、それぞれの場面や登場人物の意図を理解できている。つまり文脈を理解できている。そのため新しい単語が出てきたときに、「これを言い表わすためにこの単語を使っているのか」と実感として理解できる。
上のノルウェイの森の例で行くと、plungeで飛行機が降下していく様子がイメージされる。meadowでは青々とした草地がイメージされる。
こうして理解した言葉は、忘れない。そして自分でも使えるようになる。
学習の仕方
- 日本語で読んだことのある、好きな小説を選ぶ
- その小説の英語版を探す
- 英語版の、決めた分量(一章、10ページなど)を読む。知らない単語があってもそのまま読み進める。その場面や登場人物の意図をイメージしながら読む。
- わからなかった単語をチェックする。
- 英英辞書で、わからなかった単語の意味を調べる。
- もう一度、英語版を読む。
vocabularyを増やすのに苦労している、暗記が苦痛、全然覚えられない、単語つまんない、という方は是非お試しください。
発音の練習方法 -発音してみてNative Speakerにチェックしてもらう
発音を練習する目的は二つある。一つは聞き取れるようになること。そしてもう一つは自分が正しく発音できるようになること。この二つめの目的は軽視されがちで、我流の発音のまま続けている学習者が多い。
正しく発音できるようになるためには、まず発音記号とともに正しい発音を学ぶこと。そして次のステップでは、正しく発音できるNative Speakerに訂正してもらいつつ、発音を磨いていくのが効率的。
私がやっている方法は以下。
- 普段の英語学習中に、発音が正しく理解できていない単語をメモする。
- その単語の発音記号とともに、リスト化する。
- Native Speakerに向かって、リストの単語を自分で発音し、正しく伝わるかを試す。
- 正しく伝わらなかった場合は、どこが悪かったかを聞いて修正する。
これをやると、その単語がどういう「音のかたまり」かが分かってくる。Native Speakerが何を手がかりに微かな音の違いを聞き分けているか、が分かってくる。

私は英語学習は、中級段階から「英語による英語学習」に移行すべきと考えています。ただ「英語による英語学習」のためには、最低限の英語文法を理解している必要があり、この段階(初級段階)では日本語での英語文法学習が必要です。

Listeningで意識するポイント
Subject, Verb, Periodを探しながら聞く。これだけ。
なぜ有効なのか?
- 「まずは、SubjectとVerbをとらえればいい」と、脳に刷り込むことで、脳への負担を減らすことができる。何がくるか分からない、初めから全ての単語を聞き取り理解しなければならないという状態は脳への負担が高すぎる。野球に例えると、「ボール球も変化球もあらゆるボールを打たなければいけない状態」から「ストライクゾーンのストレートに的をしぼった状態」にするイメージ。
- SubjectとVerbを聞き取り、理解できると、次に続く単語の予測が簡単になり、さらに少ない脳への負担で文章全体を理解することができる。例えば、上記の例の3) I've never graduated…のあとには「こんな学校」が続くと予測できる。5) I wanna tell…のあとには「こんな話」が続くと簡単に予測できる。
- 英語の語順通りの理解ができる。聞いた内容を日本語に翻訳して理解していたのでは、絶対に間に合わない。SubjectとVerbは文章の冒頭に出てくることが多いため、自然に英語の語順に沿った理解ができるようになる。
「英熟語」の全体像をつかむ
日本の英語教育の中で「英熟語」と呼ばれるものには4つの種類がある。多くの教材が、この4つの種類をごちゃまぜにしていて、学習者を混乱させている。
1)単なるverb(動詞)+ preposition(前置詞)or adverb(副詞)
2)collocation
3)phrasal verb
4)idiom
4')idiomの一種、preposition(前置詞)+ noun(名詞)の用法
■まとめ
はじめに -このブログの目的
libright(リブライト)と申します。
私は日本の英語教育を受けて育ち、自分で英語が得意だと感じていました。社会人になってからも英語の学習を続け、TOEIC 935点をもっています。そして30代半ばになって初めてアメリカで仕事をする機会を得ました。
私がアメリカにきて痛感したのは、「自分の英語が通用しない」という事実でした。発音も、文法も、語彙も、会話も、全て。正直なところ、すごくショックを受けました。自分がやってきた英語の勉強はなんだったんだろう?と思いました。
そして、もう一度、英語を勉強しなおすことを決めました。発音も、文法も、語彙も。そのとき、心に決めたのは、「同じ過ちは繰り返さない」ということでした。言い換えると、「本当に英語を使えるようになるために、勉強しなおすんだ」ということです。
そして、英語を学び直す中で、他の英語学習者に伝えられることがたくさんあると感じています。また、日本の英語教育を知っているからこそ、伝えられることがたくさんあると感じています。そのことを、このブログに書いていきます。
